What I have in store for you is an artists’ refuge as we women explore Taos and work together in our New Mexico Studio, for the sole purpose of reconnecting, refueling and reviving our creative lives.
- Tap into the creative energy of Taos, New Mexico’s sacred earth, air, water and sky through the catalyst of art making.
- Immerse in the history and home of Mabel Dodge Luhan and her Taos Indian husband Tony Luhan
- Practice making art daily with guidance from a professional artist and expressive arts facilitator.
- Discover and work with imagery that stirs your body and soul-Yes, even if you don’t know how to draw!
- Learn how to engage the arts of drumming, movement, journaling, poetry as guides for your visual art process.
- Practice safe feedback methods to find new ways into your art making.
- Take risks and embrace innovative mixed media art making.

- Outings may include the Taos Pueblo, The Taos Museum Fechin House, The Harwood Museum, Gallery Talks and an outing to Saint Francis Asis- Chapel, made famous by Georgia O’Keefe’s painting “Rancho’s Church”

There is a relationship inherent in art making that requires tending and nurturing.
The Terroir Concept – Together, we will work with the concept of terroir, as we apply it to the creative process.
Terroir: /ter’ roir/ adj sense of place, personal connection with the earth, being present.
Wine tasters define terroir as specificity of place, land, weather affecting the character, quality, and personality of the wine. In Taos we translate this concept to our art making.

Expressive Arts Retreat In Magical Taos, New Mexico
During “The Taos Art Retreat” we explore making art while sleeping and eating in the exquisitely bohemian/historical Mabel Dodge Luhan House. We steep in the unique culture of that is Taos, and walk the Labyrinth which safely holds our process. All the while we forge a deeper connection with our own sense of place, our own personal terroir.
Explore how the Terroir of Taos effects your art’s color, character and expression. Practice giving your images voice with the giant drum, move in response to how it makes you feel and engage in dialogue with your images as your companions.
This artistic dance of moving from one discipline to another is primary to all art making, yet it is often forgotten.
It is from this place, this ability to stay present, that authentic art emerges.

- Stretching, Yoga and Labyrinth Walks
- Low Skill/High Sensitivity Art Techniques; mixed media art work using fabric arts, printmaking, transfer methods, drawing as meditation, color mixing, brush work, rubbings, collage, stitching techniques and more
- Guided Expressive arts processes include drumming/rattling, movement, and poetry to deepen and move our art making forward in a meaningful way

FYI – Additional Reservations: If you would like a room before or after our retreat dates, then you must personally call 1-800-846-2235 to request room reservations at Mabel Dodge Luhan House, facilitators are not allowed to make them for you. If you do it early enough you may be able to secure the same room that you are assigned to during the retreat, and not have to move.

Albuquerque, NM Airport (2.5 hour drive to Mabel Dodge Luhan House, Taos)
To reach Mabel Dodge Luhan House from Albuquerque
-Rent a car through Enterprise
-Reserve a Shuttle at the airport (Mabel Dodge has no shuttle service)
Limited Days a Week
Fly into Taos Airport on private airline Taos Air (25 min drive to Mabel Dodge Luhan House)
Taos Air serves Austin/Dallas/Carlsbad SD/Hawthorne LA. But, they have limited days a week that they fly into and out of Taos.
To reach Mabel Dodge Luhan House from Taos Airport
-Reserve a rental car to meet you at the airport through Enterprise.
-Check with Taos Ski Valley, they may provide a shuttle into town.
Santa Fe, NM Airport
There may be flights available into Santa Fe. You’ll have to check on that. Then it is an hour drive to Mabel Dodge Luhan House. Rent a car or look into reserving shuttle service from Santa Fe airport.
