Expressive Arts serves those who have a chronic problem or simply desire an avenue for a more fulfilling life. A typical Expressive Arts session lasts 1 to 1½ hours. A session includes the client entering the session with something that is calling for attention in their life that they are interested in exploring. After identifying this ‘issue’ Pamela will notice the client’s movements, phrases or body sensations and then begin to guide them through a painting process, a movement.... The issue has been stated but now they are letting go of the problem-centered focus and moving into the arts for the majority of the session.
For example: After the painting has time to form the client may be encouraged to journal; asking the painting what else it needs. The client may then paint some more and then be asked to make a gesture in response to the painting. The gesture may develop into a movement phrase and perhaps build into a dance. However, the gesture may call for loud, fast drumming.
Each of these art modalities allows a different way to 'be in meeting with' the image that emerges with yet another sound, drawing, poem or movement. We then assess or "harvest"...What are the thoughts, feelings, memories or body sensations that arose? How does this art making experience inform the issue or question that the client came to the session with? Does this experience speak to anything that is happening in the client’s everyday life?
These movements from one modality to another only deepen the focus or the issue that the client is carrying. We are actually moving towards the problem. Through art making and sensory awareness the client is able to see their issue, or the place they seem to be suck in their life, with new possibility. |
