THE ART HABIT; Intuitive Collage™

Intuitive Collage™ is a fun resource that stirs things up, lifts energy and awareness!

This is great tool for a periodic visual check-in.  It is the practice of allowing color, texture, and images to be helpers and guides in your life.

It enlists your physical body as your creative partner, develops awareness of body sensations (whether disturbing or nurturing) and uses breath as a creative resource.

This collage process is designed to practice letting go of ego in order to bypass our censor.

Gather your supplies

Journal
Big stack of magazines; both nurturing and disturbing
1″ flat paint brush or glue stick
White glue or glue stick
Scissors
Timer

FYI:  Set aside 30-40 minutes.

Timing is an important part of this process.  The video doesn’t state the time requirements very clearly.

So let me give them to you here.

Intuitive Collage™ 25 minutes

  • Focus on the front of the journal.  After getting used to this process you may be able to collage both the front and the back within the 25 minute session.
  • Put on some energetic music.
  • Set timer for 10 minutes
  • Go through magazines quickly; tearing  out images, patterns, color, texture and words that elicit a body sensation or attraction, both disturbing and nurturing.
  • STOP when timer goes off and move the magazines out of the way.  Gather your glue, scissors and paint brush
  • Set timer for 15 minutes
  • Lightly sand your journal front if it is shiny.
  • Begin to arrange and glue down your images
  • Try to cover all of the surface of your journal.  If the journal is brown and that is the color you want then find brown in the magazine to purposefully add it there.
  • Stop when the timer goes off.    You can work on it more later if you don’t feel complete.

MORE ABOUT INTUITIVE COLLAGE

GOAL
The goal of the Intuitive Collage™ is to focus on your breath and develop a keen awareness of what activates your body.

Its goal is NOT to make a “beautiful” or even meaningful work of art; though that may happen!

Why gather disturbing images?
If we only create art with images that are comfortable, then we can learn nothing new.  Certainly, colors and images will show up that we have identified as our companions for years.

However, there is an opening, a crack that is created, by our willingness to become vulnerable, which compels even the shyest image to emerge.

A willingness to layer randomly every image whether unfamiliar, disturbing, nurturing, mysterious, disgusting, frightening, nostalgic or soothing, opens new avenues to perceive our life narrative differently.

Why must we limit the time and materials?
The limited use of materials and time simplifies the complex process of choice and decision-making.  There is a sense of safety in this limited structure, but also a sense of freedom.  It removes concern of perfecting a technique, ensuring that the interaction between body and images is the focus instead of the end product.

My Promise To You
With practice you will be able to surrender to this process without frustration.  You will be able to let go of the idea that you are supposed to be in control.  The good news is that you are not supposed to be in control. Therefore, the outcome of this collage is not really your responsibility.
Yet, it is your gift!

Essentially,  we are practicing acceptance, surrender, deep listening and learning to receive. It is about a willingness to be an innocent, wide-eyed beginner, again.

Appropriating Images from magazines and the internet
Is it ok to use other people’s images from magazines or online in my journal?

The short answer is YES!

This is your private exploration.  It isn’t meant for the public. An initial image that activates a body sensation for you will go into your journal whether generated by you or by another photographer or artist in a magazine. Throughout our weeks together these images may become buried, layered with color, texture, words and more images.  They will become integrated, sanded, transferred and altered.  Soon they will become… your own.

Everything  that you come into contact with is fair game.  If a color, an image, a dance, or some piece of music activates a sensation in your body, your challenge is to claim it as your own and find a way to get it onto your journal page – even if someone else originally painted the painting or took the photo,  shaped the sculpture or choreographed the dance.

These are all your images.  We have entered this visual journaling experience as a way to wake up!  We will fine tune awareness of how our sensing body responds to what we encounter and through that we develop a greater sensitivity, resiliency and aliveness, as we navigate our world.
