Background on “The Bodywriting Retreat for Women”

The expressive arts Bodywriting Retreat concept was originally hatched in 1994 by Poway’s body-printing artist Pamela Underwood and San Diego’s professional writer Judy Reeves, thus the name Bodywriting. Underwood has continued to facilitate the retreats ever since. The participant’s work has been exhibited three times in the past 19 years, most recently at the South Florida Jugian Conference.

Bodywriting’s five day retreat provides a safe container for the creatively vulnerable group process of printing one’s nude body and then working with the print that arrives through dialog with the image; respectfully asking who has arrived and what it needs from the artist next. As a working partner with the image the participant responds through the expressive arts of journaling, movement, drumming, poetry and artistic feedback. Visual arts techniques of Intuitive Collage, printmaking, drawing, mixed media, acrylic and painting are used.

A strong sense of community is formed through helping each other in the studio, sharing meals, stories, drumming, walking the labyrinth and witnessing each other’s process. Artist/expressive arts therapist, Pamela Underwood expertly guides and maintains a sense of safety so that this intimately creative group process can take place and participants return to their lives resilient, inspired and restored, having gleaned new insight and direction.
